I have found that most traders do use the metatrader charting platform and I also do myself. However I only use it for my charts and I use Oanda as my broker. This type of setup of using one charting platform and another brokers works best for me and can be done with any broker of your choice.
The best advice I can give is to try out many trading platforms which can be downloaded and demoed for free before deciding which you choose to go with. Many people make the mistake of sticking with the first platform they try and this can be extremely limiting. It is important that you learn which suits you best as well as which offers you the greatest advantages. Read other people reviews and comparison charts but make it a point to spend time with a few yourself so you will know what it is you need.

My favorite platforms allow me to access the platform in multiple ways; it is important to be able to trade from any computer via a java platform, from your desktop and also from a smart phone. Also crucial is the online support services that you want to be able to access at any moment when the need arises which should be rare but when you need to talk to someone for help it is available right away.
